Even with the search returned to how you like it, as per eschwartz's post, just click on the empty background beside an existing book and this will remove any selection, allowing you to use the Add new instead of update.
OR
You can also go in Config, on the Basic tab, right hand side, uncheck the option "Default to Update when books selected. Now, even if a book is selected, you add from new.
