In the dark in bed, I use 4%. But, the font I am using is my modified Charis SIL called ChareInk. It has enough weight to it that I don't need to up it with the advanced font controls. Plus it's a very nice looking font on an eInk screen.
Clipped onto the headboard of the bed is a nice flex neck LED lamp that I can use to point at the screen for reading when I don't need the light on in the bedroom with the LED lamp.
I'm not one of those types that keeps the light on all the time. There's no need The Carta screen has good contrast and with a Kobo, you can adjust the font weight so you won't always need the light on. Plus there is a patch to allow advanced font control to work with side loaded TTF fonts.

I prefer the whiter background hence the 20% setting. At least 20 is better than the 65, that gave me eye strain, I was running when I first got it.
