Rant coming...

I am the mother to a soon to be four year old. I noticed this trend when I was pregnant and it has only gotten worse. Hospitals with birthing/breastfeeding agendas are pissing me off.

When I gave birth I wanted to breast feed. I understand that it is the best alternative for a baby. I wasn't producing any milk and my baby was losing weight. After three days and working with lactations, I had a team of nurses come in my room and harass me because I was not feeding my son often enough and he was losing weight and hungry. The lactation nurses knew that we had a good latch and that we were making an effort, I wasn't producing anything. It took the Pediatrician handing me formula and saying there was nothing wrong with supplementing breast milk with formula to stop the insanity. I probably should have gone down that path earlier but C-section recovery and then hormones and sleep deprivation and I was not at the top of my game. Little Man breast feed and used formula and did just fine. But why the lactation staff never suggested formula when they knew I was feeding him regularly and he was losing weight is beyond me. And I am not the only one with a similar story.

Now I have a friend who had to be induced in week 37 for health reasons and ended up in labor for 96 hours and having the baby born with forceps, risky, because it was too late for a C-Section. She asked about a C-Section at three different times because she was not dilating and other issues were arising. But the hospital was so intent on a vaginal birth that they kept pressuring her not to have a C-Section. All the sudden she went from not dilated to 6 cm. 96 hours of freaking labor and then a risky delivery because they did not want to do a C Section at 52 hours (when they moved to a fourth induction drug).

You would love to say that the patient can be more demanding but when you are giving freaking birth and in pain and stressed and hormonal you are not at your best. And when your spouse is in labor and at the hospital it is pretty hard to say you are changing hospitals when you feel the hospital is pressuring you.

I get it, vaginal birth and breast feeding is best. Got it. But it is not always feasible. Far more women then you know cannot produce enough breast milk to feed a baby. There are times when C Sections are necessary. Can the world please stop trying to force the perfect method down peoples throats? Just ugggghhh.

Look, I don't want women having C Sections because they are more convenient for the Doctor. I understand that the C Section rate has jumped and that there are some silly reasons for that but to pressure women into a, in the long run, risky vaginal delivery when there are a multitude of signs that a C Section is needed over a period of time is ridiculous.

Pregnancy is hard enough without people forcing an agenda on women. I read far too many posts on how awful it is that women are using formula. And how no one should suffer a C Section. Stop freaking questioning and judging my birthing experience people.

UUGGGHHHH

Oh, and my friend with the forcep delivery, is struggling to produce enough breast milk. She knows my story so started supplementing right away. And her baby needs to have a surgery on his tongue so he can latch properly. Guess how thrilled the medical staff was when she started using formula?
