Even without such a direct comparison I'd say that even $300/yr to have the latest and greatest is on the low end compared to most other hobbies.
Come to that, I have a very poorly-paid friend (he carries things around in a paint factory) who spends the equivalent of at least $300 every month on cigarettes. We all make our own decisions about how to spend the money we have.
