I think most of the issues with the NGP come from the fact that the hardware is underpowered for the Android 4.4.

you may want to check out the Kobo H2O, it's waterproof, has a bigger screen than the NGP, and despite technically being the older device feels more responsive.
In addition, Kobo has a company behind them that has proven to be willing to pour money into the device. B&N has proven they are just going to put out third rate devices while cutting back features. They've already discontinued two services, the 'Free Fridays' and the B1GO ebook in store offer. Read in store is, at best glitchy, that's when it even works and I have heard from BN employees that the program as a whole is on the chopping block. Their promise of being able to lend most books also seems to have fallen by the wayside, though that's more on the publishers.
Oh and BN recently changed their 'free in-store support' to only cover "basic troubleshooting" (left vague and undefined) as well as device set up. Meaning a store can basically determine if your troubleshooting issue is something they want to deal with or not. There have already been reports of employees telling customers they don't cover devices they are currently selling.
