Got it to work using this info from the comment section. This worked and I didn't have to do anything about that "a". Not sure why but got the "successful" message and was able to update using the *.bin file. Now to figure out what to do with it. I've got a better method
-download the jb.zip and unzip it
-move the "jb" file to the root of Kindle
-visit "kindlefere.com/jb/" on kindle's experimental browser
-follow instructions
-put "Update_jailbreak_bridge_1.14.N_install.bin" in Kindle root
-make sure you're in airplane mode
-update kindle

Glad you succeeded, but this is surprising. Branch Delay said it would only work with the "a" URL, but there are already two reports of it working without that.
