Got it to work using this info from the comment section. This worked and I didn't have to do anything about that "a". Not sure why but got the "successful" message and was able to update using the *.bin file. Now to figure out what to do with it. Haven't jailbroken my kindles before although I have "rooted" and applied custom roms to many an android phone.

I've got a better method
-download the jb.zip and unzip it
-move the "jb" file to the root of Kindle
-visit "kindlefere.com/jb/" on kindle's experimental browser
-follow instructions
-put "Update_jailbreak_bridge_1.14.N_install.bin" in Kindle root
-make sure you're in airplane mode
-update kindle
