ES File Manager is excellent and free in the Amazon appstore.

Download, install, then copy to the Kindle directory.
That worked for me on the older Fire HD 8.9. That one doesn't have an SD card slot but ES FILE MANAGER let me access my home server directly and copy from there. Some apps can even open files from the server via ES File Manager.
