My sideloaded books (mobi's) are not sticking beyond the current session.
Anyone else seen this problem? |

If it is the card that is expected behavior (alas). You can access them via a file manager or shortcuts but not the reading app, which only looks at main memory. |

How do you sideload it into main memory?

With a file manager.
ES File Manager is excellent and free in the Amazon appstore. Download, install, then copy to the Kindle directory. That worked for me on the older Fire HD 8.9. That one doesn't have an SD card slot but ES FILE MANAGER let me access my home server directly and copy from there. Some apps can even open files from the server via ES File Manager. |

Amazon should really make it possible to store ebook content on external storage like any decent Android reading app does. This has to be a pretty trivial enhancement, they're already doing it for video, etc.

Ebooks are small. It really isn't a big thing for most people so, low priority. And if they do it they'll most likely do it one-way; sideloaded content only. |

Compared to video, it's nothing. 120Mb will hold maybe 10 minutes of SD video and 2-3 minutes of compressed 1080p HD. One good quality 1080p movie file could fill up the Fire 7 main memory. So Amazon added the SD slot. The vast majority of text-based ebooks run under 1Mb and you could store anywhere between 4,000 and 10,000 on the Fire 7. (We've been down this way before since the days if the Kindle 2, haven't we?) Some folks need/want a lot of space for their ebooks--most people don't. |

Put CM 12.1 on it, put link2sd on it, format the sd card, install kindle app and any other reading apps to the SD card and then you can do anything you want with your books. No need to be stuck with Fire Os which I think is a hinderence.

I find I'm using mine mostly for audio books and the text-to-speech book function and occasionally for music. CM 12.1 would be nice, but for me I'm not sure its necessary on this device. If I needed Google apps, or some app not available in Amazon's app store, it would be useful. In any event, I'm glad CM can be put on it, something I might be more interested in down the road.

Ok, we managed to get a sideloaded audiobook to work on these Kindle Fires. Download Astro Player Nova (the pro model is free). Load your mp3 audiobook into the SD Card. It will find the audiobook and play it just fine. Still working on getting text-to-speech to work beyond the 2nd page. Not sure if we have the right app for it or not. There might be better audiobook players, but getting them to load on the Fire is a challenge. Many seem to be blocked or simply not available. It's a shame the Audible player won't do it. Plays all my Mp3 audiobooks on my Ipod.
![]() Suggestions are welcome. I find also that some apps that work fine on my Fire HDX do not work on the $49 Fire (what DO we call that one? Is that a Fire 7?). Last edited by Tarana; 02-07-2016 at 12:15 PM. |

Amazon calls it "Fire (5th Generation)". Amazon is totally clueless when it comes to naming devices. So the $49 or $50 Fire is just as good as any other name.

I finally gave in and bought myself a case for the Fire tab. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a case when I had a small amount invested in the tab, but found a nice case on ebay for $4.99
http://www.ebay.com/itm/221936684377...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT It took a couple of weeks to get here, probably was directly from China, but is a nice case. I'm really liking the Fire tab. So far so good, no real problems or issues with it, and even though it is a modified version of Lollipop, the OS is quite good. |
