Or he can simply take 30-40 screenshots (at desired zoom level) on any high-resolution apple tablet in a couple of minutes (for the next reading session) transfering those images thereafter into any ereader of his choice.

Repeating it again for the next reading session or taking more screenshots e.g. 100-200 for several reading sessions in advance.

At the end of the book he can delete all those images or create pdf/epub therefrom (for his own usage, law permitting) e.g. 50 MB or 5 MB ocr-ed pdf instead of 500 MB screenshots.
