When calibre sees an ereader for the first time, it looks for the books on the device and tries to match them with the books in the library. It does a pretty good job of this, but sometimes it doesn't match them correctly. The "match book" can be used to fix this. But, you then need to run "update cached metadata" to make this permanent. This updates the "metadata.calibre" file on the device.
After this, when you send a book to the device, calibre will update the "metadata.calibre" file on the device adding that book. You shouldn't need to do the match and cache update again unless you add books to the device using some other method. Or something happens to the "metadata.calibre" file.
