Wow, OtherDeb, you sound like me! I got an MD degree in 1984 and thought Iwould just be an autodidact after that. But when the medical climate in Philly destabilized in the mid-90's, and I was dealing more with politics than patients, I felt unfulfilled. I had a definite midlife crisis in my late 30's/early 40's and as a result:
1.got married
2. started working toward an MA in Jewish Studies
My MA thesis (which is now
my book) was completed in 2005, and I graduated in 2006. The whole process took about 8 years, and I loved every minute of it, even the night classes where my dinner was a cup of tea and a bag of pretzels from the vending machine, and the marathon week-long classes of eight hours a day (for which I used vacation time when I was working full-time).
