The same is true of every computer sold at the time, though. You make it sound like they are in some kind of unique position here. It's not like I'm complaining that I can't upgrade a computer that came with XP to Windows 10. I don't think it's unreasonable for a consumer to expect that a brand new laptop should be able to upgrade to the next version of Windows, which was being tested less than a year later, without needing explicit promises from the manufacturer.
