Some Linux kernels with support of upto 768MB of RAM, and no support for things like audio, cdrom, bluetooth, strange resolutions, etc... are probably a much better, and more efficient ground to start from.

Seriously? You compare Android as a complete OS to a kernel for linux? What do you think Android uses for a kernel that makes a real linux kernel so much superior?
