No, all the firmware remains just as it was, with the stock reading software and user interface (Nickel) fully functional. There is only a tiny modification to the start up code to direct the program flow to the launching program Tshering's "Kobo Start Menu"(KSM). In fact KSM not only makes it possible to launch the alternative reading software but can also launch Nickel. The other programs added, KOReader, Sergey's Vlasovsoft pbchess launcher which includes his port of Coolreader, games and utilities; operate as separate programs in their own code space - just like the separate programs on your computer. KSM also includes scripts that can provide additional refinements to the stock software and numerous scripted utilities of its own.
The everything you didn't read, was written as an "Install Guide", with a few tips, to get started. I guess I should go over it again, I try to keep it up to date, but there have been a number of changes that could effect things. If you encounter any problems installing from the guide, please let me know, there.
