This is part of the Retrieval Artist Series which I highly recommend, I have bought and own all the books in this series.

Also, if you do decide to start with this one - if you like it enough to want to keep reading, go back and start with Book 1. There's a subseries within the Retrieval Artist series (Anniversary Day Saga) that needs the background from the other books, IMHO. The subseries consists of the last 8 novels in the series, and they definitely are not written as standalones.
I'm trying to avoid spoilers, so I apologize if this all sounds vague.

I also agree with FizzyWater, while you can read this book as a stand alone you would be missing information from the previous novels which would make the book even better.
Book 1 The Disappeared: A Retrieval Artist Novel
https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/eb...l-artist-novel is currently $2.99 and all these books are couponable at kobo should you wish to go through the series. There is also a prequel short novel which you could also start with and which has previously been discounted although is not currently on sale called The Retrieval Artist: A Retrieval Artist Short Novel
