This is part of the Retrieval Artist Series which I highly recommend, I have bought and own all the books in this series.

I think Rusch intended this to be a series originally that could be enjoyed as standalone books. But there's a lot of backstory you'd be missing if you didn't start from the beginning. I'm the sort that just has to start at the beginning...if I know it exists.

Also, if you do decide to start with this one - if you like it enough to want to keep reading, go back and start with Book 1. There's a subseries within the Retrieval Artist series (Anniversary Day Saga) that needs the background from the other books, IMHO. The subseries consists of the last 8 novels in the series, and they definitely are not written as standalones.

I'm trying to avoid spoilers, so I apologize if this all sounds vague.
