Reminds me of a few years ago when I was touring, with a realtor, a house that was for sale. From the time that I went in there, there was this horrible smell. There was no electricity in the house and it was completely empty except for one thing--a freezer in the garage. As we got closer and closer to the garage, the strength of the smell increased. There had to have been something in the freezer that had rotted. If the smell was that bad with the freezer hermetically sealed (by the magnetic seals around the door(s)), I can't imagine what it would have been like with the door(s) open! I suspect that the previous owners/tenants knew about the problem and just decided to leave it for someone else to deal with.
Too bad, too, because I liked the house itself. But I didn't even make an offer on it. I'm sure that the smell went away eventually--after the freezer was removed--but I just couldn't disassociate the house from that awful smell!
