I, for one, love the light layer, because it makes the Kindle brighter. Now I can read in public transport, which I could never do with the Touch. I could, with a good paperback or a hardcover.
Setting the light so it exactly blends in with the surrounding light, making the Kindle as bright as possible but without making it look illuminated, is the best way to go for me.
I never read in full darkness; not with a Kindle, nor a tablet or computer monitor. It hurts my eyes and head. Even when reading in bed, I have an overhead lamp on; strong enough to read a paperback, but not enough to read an unlit Kindle.
