After looking into the Windows Default sound theme, the sound for a rather generic "system notification", which I guess is where updates would fall under, is somehow similar(ish) to the new mail sound. Maybe change the system notification sound to something more distinctive and see if that's what you hear the next time the screen goes dark on you
