In hardware, many of the readers are related even across brands... they all have arm architecture, eink driver, ... so I'd not be too surprised if someone managed to make alien firmware work.

However there is a lot of custom code on the Kobo, like the way it detects which make / model / resolution it should be using [based on the device's serial number stored on the SD card], that's not easily portable.
