The Seige of Petersburg was a series of battles that lasted a little over nine months, in 1864-65. One thing that stands out to me about the Seige of Petersburg is the fact that more soldiers lost their lives in it--some 70,000--than any single battle of the Civil War--Antietam, Shiloh, (Second) Bull Run, Gettysburg, you name it. Yet, those battles are much more famous than the Seige of Petersburg.
