On the Chapters site, it reads: "Kobo eReaders must be returned to one of our Chapters, Indigo or Coles stores." Last I heard, someone who wanted to return a device from the U.S. was told to find someone in Canada who could walk it into a store for them.

The Kobo site doesn't have a clear policy on returns anywhere on their site, though I gather if you purchase a defective device from another vendor (e.g., Chapters or an indie bookstore), they may exchange it?

The indie bookstores I contacted either never responded or responded that they do not accept returns on Kobo readers at all.

I'm not trying to be snarky or troll-ish. I am very tempted by Kobo devices. I've even put them in an online shopping cart several times. But I always stop short of clicking the "buy" button when I think about the return process if I am one of the unlucky few who happen to get a bad screen (not common, I know, but it happens).
Before I bought my regular Glos locally from a bookstore, I asked about returns if it's defective and the bookstore would accept the returns for 30 days. It was even printed on their receipt. Perfectly normal for purchases most anywhere. If the reader is defective, I would think the store HAS to accept the return and provide you with another reader. If you bought a book that had a printing error and was missing a page, wouldn't you expect to return it to the bookstore where you bought it for a corrected copy? Defective is defective, they can't single out ereaders and say no, we don't accept returns.

If my Glo HD was defective from Chapters, I would fully expect to have to return it to the store at my expense for the postage. Just like I would have had to take it back to a store locally if I bought it here. They mailed it out, why wouldn't they accept it by mail in return? I'd call them first and find out their preferred procedure, often an RMA is issued first when returning anything by mail under warranty and I would think Chapters might do the same.

If the reader just stops working after 30 days, then it becomes Kobo's responsibility to fix or replace it under their warranty, regardless of where it was purchased. Stores are no longer liable. If you provide receipts proving the date of purchase, I don't see how Kobo can refuse to honor their warranty if bought from anywhere other than Kobo directly. Kobo isn't just the store you purchased from, it's the manufacturer so must honor the warranty.

I really didn't worry about the return of a defective reader at all.
