I read this years ago, when I was as student at the University of Arkansas and thoroughly enjoyed it. So much so, that I have the First Edition hardback, in F/F condition.
I also met him, along with Francis Irby Gwaltney, another Arkansas writer. ("Destiny's Chickens," an hilarious 'red-neck' novel.)
'Stoner' was nominated for an important literary award at the time (I"m pretty sure), but I can't remember if it was the National Book Award or the Pulitzer Prize.
ADDED: In checking, I see that 'Stoner' did indeed
WIN the
National Book Award for Best Novel. It shared the award with 'Chimera," by John Barth. (Barth, a post-modernist, is another writer whom I read and collect.)
