My laptop's an early 2013 version, and if I count as I start up iTunes, I don't get to "2". I then load the epubs directly into the appropriate apps on the Apps screen (2 seconds if I've located the epub file first), and sync (51 seconds this time, but that's because it had to copy six podcast episodes over since I hadn't synced for a couple days. No cable mucking around as it syncs by wifi); and I have never had an epub 'not load'.
Eddy might be great, and each to their own, but I really think the "AVOID ITUNES OMG KILL IT WITH FIRE" attitude around the traps is not always reality-based. And I'm not an itunes fangirl particularly - it has some 'quirks' here and there that have driven me up the wall in the past - but loading epubs into apps isn't one of those quirks.
