Not sure why you think anyone would be due a free replacement outside of the warranty period? While I've never had to do a Kindle return to Amazon, from what I've read they seem very willing to work with customers even beyond the warranty period at times. Say if your refurbished died 3 months and 1 day from now, it's very possible they'll reconsider and send another refurbished unit. But I wouldn't expect that as the norm and I think they look at each out of warranty request on a per-item basis.
So in general, no, you won't get a free replacement from any company outside of the warranty period. Why would they? But Amazon seems more customer friendly in that regard and you
might get lucky.
