Multi-column pdfs (scans or textual) should not pose a problem even for an average 6" e-ink reader, using its 2-column or multi-column mode in portraite or using k2pdfopt app to crop it in its multi-column mode beforehand.
It takes four screens per page though, but the same is true with reflowed mobi/epub pages or using 10" tablet in landscape.
