I was just talking about performance AND compression (which is bothers me the most, while talking about a compression software).

Well, I also use that (well actuall, the SAP version of tar, but it's the same), but that's when I work on Unix, when most of the time my hands are at the keyboard. I don't like cygwin very much on Windows instead. I "feel" it clumsy and not so well integrated. But I know it's just me.

Yeah well, the ease of use between 7-zip and Winrar are pretty much the same: all these kind of software's GUI looks alike, imho.
Of course a cli compressor might be easier - that depends on habits, however - but tar isn't in the comparison in the Windows world.
