That little light at the top flashes if I have the usb cable plugged in.
It quits blinking when unplugged.
Also the computer does not recognize when connected.

It's only 5 days old, so I'm trying to send it back to the factory.

Any suggestions in the mean time?

Thanks in advance
ps. I went to the kobo help and tried a reset, then a manual factory reset, still nothing
There is no "Android portion" on a stock Kobo Aura HD. You should be able to do a Factory Reset, (holding the power slider all the way over for a count of 20 [to make sure that it is off], then holding down the light switch while you hold the power slider over until you see the reset starting (lights flashing)) You may have to try a few times to get the timing right.

Luck;
Ken
