Hm, I don't think an update of the firmware would help....
You're sure that nothing is left from your edit of the input.lua file? Did you try a clean reinstall already? Maybe temporarily saving the .kobo/koreader folder and replacing it by a pristine copy of the release ZIP file from github?

If that doesn't help, please get back - we would need to offer a workaround for the units that have this problem. I've long planned to build a "setup assistent", that deals with initial setup of display orientation and touch panel orientation - not gotten around to do it, though.
