Repeat as needed.
Another God-send for us old fogies; Go to your local Walmart, Target, discount store/electric outlet and find a Omron Electronic Nerve Stimulator. My wife bought me the 4-pad version but the 2-pad is more than enough. When set for Region "waist," and Massage "knead," and the pads placed on opposite sides of lumbar spine, it's 'almost' as good as a deep muscle massage. Some mornings when I wake up and can't bend enough to touch my knees, 20 minutes with the Omron and I'm ready to dance the Nutcracker! Well... OK... maybe 40 minutes. But it sure feels good. I don't know if these devices actually 'cure' anything, but they certainly loosen up and relax tight muscles.

Ice never works for my back - just tightens it up more - I find intense heat - hot as I can stand - works the best.
Stitchy - thanks for the info on the Omron - I've seen commercials but dismissed them as a gimmick - I'll have to check them out.
