Why not use tags in Calibre? Any book can have multiple tags, and the tags are only limited by your imagination. For example, I have a "Placeholder" tag for keeping track of books I don't have (say, a missing book in a series), a "Paper" tag for keeping track of my paper books, a "Wishlist" tag, as well as the usual suspects: fiction, non-fiction, cooking, poetry, etc.
