I did not have to sneak in reading time. My parents were not avid readers but they encouraged me to read as much and as often as I wanted. I don't think they thought I read either too much or not enough; my reading didn't get in the way of anything that I had to do or anything we did as a family. They never told me I couldn't read and I don't remember ever being sneaky about my reading. I did read in bed, but never with my head under the covers.
On the other hand, I am constantly telling my oldest son to stop reading. (Not that he reads too much, but often at inappropriate times.) I don't think he sneaks reading time, as I don't really restrict him except for mealtimes and other activities where I expect him to be engaged with other people. Although I guess I also wouldn't know since the whole point of "sneaking" is to hide from me. LOL
