Alrighty Every One. I am able to reproduce this on a Kobo Aura HD (Thanks to my lovely wife).

And the culprit was..... *drum roll*

An older version of JSWolfs' Charis SIL CompactLarger font.

Herr JSWolf kindly provided me with a new version and I am down to 1 times in ten crashing!!

I can highlight and make annotations now
