Your two anecdotes versus the millions of people who have not had this problem.
I suspect if this was a legitimate concern we would have a few more reports

and Amazon would be the laughingstock of the ereading world.
It's not difficult to figure out what happened. Clearly,
something went wrong! That does not mean it is the nature of a Kindle to do this.
Occasionally things go wrong. Responsible individuals recognize this, deal with it, complain to Amazon, whatever... and file it under "something to become worried about if it turns out to be reproducible or a widespread problem".
