I do not own a T68 myself, but I had a lot of similar experiences on a rooted NOOK Simple Touch. I posted my thoughts on using Airplane mode + Wifi and Tasker to (hopefully) mitigate some of these problems in the other T68 wifi thread.

I can tell you from past experience that the battery gauge means nothing until the battery has been through a few cycles. I once ran a device streaming video for 3 hours with the battery gauge showing 3%. After running until it dropped, the gauge was accurate. (Never mind the wisdom of doing so, it was a test.) If your device is dropping dead quickly, worry. If the little gauge seems to be bouncing about, don't panic until it's been through a few cycles.

If Booxstor will ship me a unit, I'll be happy to lend further assistance. I learned a lot fighting Android on the NST.
