This has been picked up by the writers of the last series, who had the doctor saying that he was a "dad", then producing a daughter for him.

Oh right, granddaughter. We watched them all in order on PBS in the 80's-90's, but that was a long time ago to remember. When they came out at Amazon on VHS, we started buying those, and almost immediately, they became obsolete.
