It's John Carpenter's first film. It's SciFi (humour), not horror. If your mind is suitably ... er... something, then it is a hysterical film (though almost no-one seems to agree with me on this assessment

). Amazon reports it available on DVD in the US at $5.99, but there doesn't appear to be anything other than an R1 DVD. I don't think its available elsewhere.

wikipedia entry seems pretty good, which makes me wonder what the copy badgoodDeb's friend has. Have a look at that for the synposis (with spoilers!).
Sort of film that I think is worth watching if you get a chance to see it, but probably not to go hideously out of your way for. However, if you do, in the immortal last screen words of Desmond Llewelyn, "Always have an escape plan".
