Nothing really to worry about if you hold vol+ and power at boot you go to download mode which is really for flashing things from a pc through ADB and theres probably no real point going there if you don't.
vol- and power at boot takes you to the recovery you can do things like factory reset or clear your cache partition which can sometime help keep the device stable.
Basically to navigate you just use the volume keys to move up and down and power to select I think if I remember right you have to use vol+ and power together at some point if you select recovery to get to the menu I've done it a few times to wipe the cache partition after an update.
