It is still going to be a f*cking mess. Why you ask? Because people will be updating to ADE 3 or downloading ADE 3 for the first time on new computers. nd they won't realize why their newly purchased ePub won't work outside of ADE 3 and they'll have no place to turn to find out why. A lot of people would be lost.
My mother has a T1. I help her with her T1 when she needs/wants help. That's not a problem. I could write instructions for her so I have less to do to help her out. She's good at following directions. But if ADE 3 got in the way, and I wasn't there to help, she'd be totally lost.
I do think Kobo would go to the new crappy RDSMK10 (SP?) and Kobo users won't have a problem (for those that do use DRM).
Also, if publishers start pushing for the use of the new DRM, they will find a lot of customers not buying (if it's clearly labeled as such) or pushing big time for returns.
