The Kobo Utilities plugin reads the status from the device when it is connected. Then it stores it in custom columns. I think that is the only way to do it for most e-ink ereaders.

For Calibre Companion and other apps on iOS or Android, I could see it happening in other ways. If they can do two-way communication with calibre, then it should be possible, but I could see it needing a plugin or change in calibre.
