Many cats are very particular about texture when it comes to scratching, and they have differing tastes. I've had cats that were partial to nubby weaves, Berber carpet, regular carpet, cardboard, plain wood, etc. By making sure an appropriate scratching surface that fits their preferences is always available, and occasionally dusting that surface with catnip, I've yet to lose a piece of furniture to cat scratching. I also praise them outrageously when they use the right surface. Our current sofa is leather and four different cats have basically ignored it, because there was always something around that they liked more.

Maybe I'm lucky, but that's worked through seven cats and 20+ years. My last remaining cat prefers regular carpet pile, so she's pretty easy to accommodate with virtually any commercial scratching post.
