You could do what I did: Start in the middle of the series with a story that seems interesting, and then go back and read book 1 if you find you like the character relationships and the world.
I absolutely, positively cannot knowingly start a series anyplace but book one! It would just be WRONG.

Romance AND science fiction elements too?--sorry, but I think that just killed it!
