Yeah, the Nora Roberts does show through in the two or three Eve-Roarke love scenes in every book (and I do find them a bit tiresome...Roarke's romance-hero perfection is starting to get on my nerves actually) and there is a light sci-fi element to the world, which you also said was not your taste, but it is very light most of the time.
But the cop murder mystery story, which is always the main plot, is usually interesting.

She also does a fairly good job of not requiring you to read the books in order, especially if you only care about the murder stories.
You could do what I did: Start in the middle of the series with a story that seems interesting, and then go back and read book 1 if you find you like the character relationships and the world.
