I'm not sure. That shot is a frame from the video, so the kindle does actually do that, so I suppose in terms of hardware it is possible.
The Kobo has a night-mode hack and Coolreader includes one too. I wonder if it would make the front-light more usable in very dark environments. I don't think it's that big a deal to implement. I have it on a Nook ST in Coolreader, but without a front-light, it's pointless.
