I think that's a fair point. Why should an e-reader be limited to it manufacturer's store? The business model is proprietary and excludes competition. You buy a Kindle and you have to buy a book from Amazon and only Amazon. Sure you can buy from other stores, strip DRM and side-load, but how many users can do that or can be bothered to do that? Amazon doesn't even allow users to use epub and has created its own format to discourage users from using other sources. Sure, you can convert, but again, not many users are able to do this. The business model is extremely aggressive. At least Kobo reads epubs. This is part of the appeal of Sony to many users. It is the most open platform of the three big players.
