I think the market for those is too small for Amazon to be interested. A 13.3" reader (or tablet) isn't very mobile and you may as well use a laptop if you're going to drag around something so bulky. Outside of research and education, does the average consumer read PDFs frequently? To an extent where it would justify the purchase of a dedicated device that would probably cost $1000 or more? Amazon seems to aim at the mass market with most of what they do, not specialized or expert markets.

Sony has always been more innovative, with a lot of what they do, and they are not afraid to lose money on the more experimental projects. In a way, they set trends that then others follow if they turn out to be effective. That frequently has downsides for the customers, like new memory card formats that cost a ton for a while , but overall it's one of the reasons why I like them as a company.
