I haven't read any reference book on my eInk device (which is my first, and which I own since a week).
I'm interested in reading reference books on that device, but I agree fully with your concerns.
First it depends on the type of the reference book.
When it contains lots of info grafik, data tables, photographs with important content, ... and other non-text parts: you can forget about it, of course.
When it's PDF, forget about it.
But may be the most readers of this thread are completely happy with the usability of their Kobo. I have no idea.
