You have no choice other than sideloading then. The upgrade from Kobo's servers would be to 2.8.1.

Going back to SameerH's comment, I'm not sure that I would interpret it as a veiled threat. I saw it as a simple statement that sideloading firmware is not an official Kobo supported method of installing firmware and that there is no guarantee that doing so will be supported in the future. As an example, the Xerox multifunction machines I support had a recent firmware update that removed the ability to install unsigned firmware updates which prevents earlier firmware versions from being reinstalled.
