To let you know that you've pressed the button successfully, I think. Something somewhere mentioned a visual cue that the button presses had taken.

I'm actually liking the buttons, so far. They're big enough to be easy to hit, but they aren't the entire length of each side like the Kindle ones, so there's space to hold onto the thing that
isn't button.
